E-commerce optimization: complete checklist to sell more in 2026

11 min

Most e-commerce stores lose sales to avoidable problems: slow pages, confusing checkout, missing basic SEO, broken mobile experience. Before investing more in paid traffic, optimize what you already have. A 1% increase in conversion rate for a store generating $40K/month means $5K more per year without spending an extra cent on ads. This checklist covers the highest-impact optimizations for 2026.

Performance: the basics many stores ignore

Green Core Web Vitals are a prerequisite, not a differentiator. LCP below 2.5 seconds (optimize the hero image with preload, use WebP/AVIF, set width and height). CLS below 0.1 (reserve space for banners, fonts with font-display swap, explicit dimensions on all media). INP below 200ms (defer non-essential scripts, code splitting, lazy hydration). Run PageSpeed Insights on the home, a PDP and a PLP. If any metric is red, it is costing you sales right now.

Technical SEO: organic visibility

Unique, descriptive title tags on all pages (product, category, home). Meta descriptions with call-to-action and value proposition. Correct canonical tags (avoid duplicate content on filters and pagination). Structured data: Product schema on PDPs, BreadcrumbList on all pages, Organization on home. Updated sitemap.xml submitted to Google Search Console. Robots.txt blocking checkout, account and internal search. Clean, descriptive URLs (avoid numeric IDs).

Checkout: where the sale happens or dies

One-page checkout or clear progress indicator (visible steps). Guest checkout option (no forced registration). Multiple visible payment methods. Shipping calculation in cart, not only at checkout. Security badges and certificates visible. Abandoned cart recovery by email (3-email sequence at 24h, 48h and 72h). Each unnecessary step in checkout reduces conversion by 10-15%.

Mobile: where the traffic is

Over 70% of e-commerce traffic in Brazil comes from mobile. If mobile experience is inferior to desktop, you are losing the majority of customers. Test on real devices (not just DevTools). Touch targets of 48x48px minimum. Forms with correct input types (tel, email, number). Responsive images with srcset. Functional and fast mobile menu. Mobile checkout without zoom or horizontal scroll.

Analytics and measurement

Google Analytics 4 configured with e-commerce events (view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, purchase). Google Search Console monitored weekly. Conversion funnel mapped: home > PLP > PDP > cart > checkout > confirmation. Identify where the biggest drop in the funnel is and prioritize optimizing that point. If you do not measure, you do not improve. Configure basic events before any other optimization.

Next steps

Do not try to do everything at once. Prioritize by impact: 1) Performance (affects everything, including SEO and conversion). 2) Checkout (biggest direct impact on revenue). 3) Mobile (where the traffic is). 4) Technical SEO (cumulative result in the medium term). 5) CRO (continuous refinement).
